Infill Development

Infill Guidelines

Not only does the Over-the-Rhine Foundation work diligently to preserve the existing historic fabric of OTR, we also have a vested interest in ensuring that infill development and additions to existing buildings support the historic character of the neighborhood. If you are a developer or property owner considering an infill project in OTR, we encourage you to read the existing OTR Historic District Conservation Guidelines. Reading these guidelines will help you identify and appreciate the historic character of Over-the-Rhine, and give you ideas about how your design can enhance the district.

Infill Database

With increasing development in Over-the-Rhine comes both challenge and opportunity. One of the challenges is how to integrate new infill construction into the neighborhood in such a manner that it is respectful of the existing OTR Historic District, while adding to the overall sense of place. The Over-the-Rhine Foundation is addressing this challenge by working with the community to develop a set of illustrated guidelines for infill construction. These infill guidelines will become a resource to help developers and architects as they navigate the complex but exciting process of building new in one of America’s most celebrated historic districts.

As part of this process, the Over-the-Rhine Foundation needs your help. We are developing a database containing examples of infill development in historic districts from across the nation and the world. This database will provide raw data that will then be analyzed and used to assist in the development of the illustrated guidelines. We have set up an online Yogile Database where anyone can upload images of infill development in historic areas. Please visit the link and add your photos to help us build a robust database (be sure to include any source information you have, such as location, architect, photo credit etc.) Yogile does not require an account in order to upload images, so just click the link, hit ‘Add More Photos’, and you’re done!
